That is the official reason, however I tend to think that they are people that Gem "absorbed" at a young age using her powers. She held on to them too long and thier personas integrated with her.

This case of MPD is different in the way that all the personalities know each other and even talk to each other without missing a beat. Gem is aware of them saying she can always feel them trying to get control. However, they will usually work to attain whatever goal Gem wants.

These are some of the personalities that have presented themselves: Soldier (tactically efficient and somewhat violent) and Little Gemma (meek and easily startled.), a cunning personality, and a strategist. In issue #11 a psychotic personality was introduced. It is implied that this personality came from Gem but had never before presented itself (even to the other personalities) and then possesed Bliss at the end of the issue. I believe that the personality originated from Bliss to begin with and was ripped from her (causing the collapse) when the other personalities were ripped from Gem.

POWERS: Copycat can take control of any mind in her vicinity. Though limited to only one mind at a time, this power is absolute; any motion she makes is duplicated by the victim. However, in the first DV8 annual, while brainwashed Copycat was able to control two people at a time.
